In 2004, Dr. Nelson Mandela and Jürgen E. Schrempp received an Honorary BAMBI for their extraordinary dedication to the fight against AIDS in South Africa.
Expressing his thoughts on the Honorary BAMBI, Jürgen E. Schrempp said: "I would like to sincerely thank the Hubert Burda Publishing House, and Hubert Burda personally. In presenting this prize, they give the fight against HIV and AIDS another voice. Nelson Mandela is undoubtedly one of the most impressive individuals of our time. I can only congratulate the jury for awarding him the BAMBI, and it is my great honour to be awarded together with him."
The BAMBI Media Prize, endowed by Dr Hubert Burda, is awarded by Hubert Burda Media at the end of each year. It honours people with vision and creativity, who have particularly touched or inspired the German public.
The winners are selected by the BAMBI jury under the chairmanship of Dr Hubert Burda. The BAMBI is awarded in sixteen categories, including Film, Commitment, Charity and Sport. There is also a BAMBI awarded by the public, in which television viewers' votes determine its recipient.
Winners of the Honorary BAMBI include: Queen Silvia of Sweden for her children's fund, the World Childhood Foundation; Queen Rania of Jordan for her dedication to women's equality and against child abuse in Arab countries; and the former Norwegian Foreign Minister, Johan Joergen Holst, for his contribution to the peace process in the Middle East.
Other BAMBI prize winners in recent years include Bill Clinton, Heidi Klum, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jackson, Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Nelson Mandela, Iris Berben, Elton John and Klaus Maria Brandauer.
Each year, the BAMBI Award Ceremony is one of the biggest media events in Germany. With an unaided awareness of 94 percent, Germany's most important media prize enjoys an absolute monopoly - in Germany, its reputation far exceeds even the legendary Academy Awards in Hollywood, the Oscars.
